  • EXCERPT FROM MIKE ROUX’S OUTDOOR NOTEBOOK

I already had a mental picture in my mind of the mount I was going to have made of my two boy’s two birds. And I also knew exactly who to call to make this happen. That very afternoon I called Rick Morris in Greentop, Missouri. Rick and his entire family are artists. They own and operate “Turkey Roost Taxidermy”. Rick and his son Drake are responsible for the finest turkey taxidermy on the planet. Is that a bold statement? Not when you see their work. And I still think awards are a good measure of talent and expertise. “Turkey Roost” holds a National Championship, an International Championship and oh yeah, The World Turkey Taxidermy Title, as well. That is good enough for me. When I took the boys’ birds to Rick I gave him the description of what I had in mind. He drew no pictures. He took no notes. He said he understood my desires and he could do it. Somehow I trusted him fully. It might have been the fact that I was standing in his studio that is filled with hundreds, that is right, hundreds of wild turkey mounts in every pose imaginable. Rick and his crew mount over 1,200 turkeys each year. They mount 300 to 400 especially for Bass Pro Shops for their stores and client hunters. Most of the mounts they are requested to do are strutting and gobbling toms. When I told Rick I wanted Parker’s jake laying on it’s back and Spencer’s tom on top, flogging it, he just smiled. I knew right then he could do it. This mount is now proudly displayed in my office with my gobbler mounts. Rick, Drake and the whole Morris Team are true professionals and I highly recommend you call them at (660) 665-8109, check out their website, www.theturkeyroost.com, or better yet, make the drive to their studio and be blown away by their work. There is none better. They also make some amazing turkey decoys.

  • CHRIS PARRISH, KNIGHT & HALE

THE TURKEY ROOST IS A FIRST CLASS TAXIDERMY SHOP WITH A FIRST CLAS GROUP HEADING IT UP, RICK AND THE GANG DO BUSINESS CORRECTLY AND TREAT PEOPLE THE WAY THEY SHOULD BE TREATED. NO ONE ELSE WILL MOUNT ANY OF MY TURKEYS.

  • RANDY COLLINS

RICK AND DRAKE,

I WANTED TO TAKE A MOMENT AND THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT TURKEY MOUNT THAT IS NOW HANGING IN MY OFFICE. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL TURKEY MOUNTS DONE, BUT WHEN I PUT YOUR WORK UP AGAINST THE OTHER MOUNTS THAT ARE HANGING ON MY WALL, YOUR MOUNT PUTS ALL OTHERS TO SHAME. I APPRECIATE THE HARD WORK, DEDICATION AND PRIDE THAT GOES INTO EACH AND EVERY TURKEY. YOUR CLASSY WORK IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE WHEN IT COMES TO ANY AVID TURKEY HUNTER THAT EXPECTS A PERFECT MOUNT AND THE TURKEY ROOST DOES JUST THAT.

AGAIN, THANK YOU,

RANDY COLLINS

  • ELLEN BENITZ, NWTF REGIONAL DIRECTOR, M.O.

I USE MY FULL STRUT TURKEY RICK DID FOR ME AND THE STANDING DECOY AS DECORATIONS AT MOST OF MY BANQUETS. I ALWAYS HAVE TO REMIND FOLKS THAT THE DECOY IS JUST A DECOY, THEY ALL THINK IT LOOKS GREAT! I TELL THEM, “IF YOU THINK THIS LOOKS GREAT, YOU SHOULD SEE WHAT HE DOES WHEN HE REALLY TAKES HIS TIME!” NOW THAT I HAVE A TRAILER, IT IS A LOT EASIER TO HAUL THESE BIRDS AROUND! THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT OF THE NWTF AND THE WITO PROGRAM!

ELLEN BENITZ

  • COUNTRYSIDE CHRISTIAN CHURCH

JOHN

  • DEAR RICK,

YOU AND I SPOKE A COUPLE WEEKS AGO. I TOLD YOU I WAS CURRENTLY USING A BIRD WHOLESALER IN M.D. I’M LOOKING FOR A CHANGE AS FAR AS TURKEYS GO. I SAW A PICTURE OF ONE OF YOUR BIRDS IN NAT MAGAZINE, BEAUTIFUL WORK. I’M SENDING YOU A 17 1/2LB TOM I SHOT THIS MAY. I WOULD LIKE A FULL STRUT BIRD WITH A FREEZE DRIED HEAD. THE HEAD DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THE ORIGINAL. I ENCLOSED A PICTURE FOR HEAD PAINTING REFERENCE. I HAVE SEVERAL MORE BIRDS IN THE FREEZERS. WHEN I GET THIS ONE BACK, WE’LL TAKE IT FROM THERE.

THANK YOU,

PETE

  • DEAR RICK AND CO.,

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR MOUNTING MY TROPHY TURKEY. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE HOW GOOD HE LOOKS, BUT PROBABLY WON’T BE ABLE TO SEE HIM UNTIL NEXT SPRING WHEN I GO TO SEDALIA TO SHOOT ANOTHER ONE BIGGER AND BETTER! THIS BIRD DOESN’T WIN THE HEAVY WEIGHT OR LONGEST BEARD PRIZE, BUT HE HAS THE LONGEST HOOKS OF ANY TURKEY EVERY KILLED IN OUR FAMILY AND LARGE CIRCLE OF TURKEY HUNTING FRIENDS, AND PROBABLY THE LONGEST SHOT TOO-AT 70 YARDS OUT IN AN OPEN FIELD. HE WAS WALKING ACROSS COMING A LITTLE CLOSER, BUT THAT WAS AS CLOSE AS HE WAS GOING TO APPROACH, SO IT WS NOW OR NEVER. ONE LUCKY PELLET GOT A VITAL SPOT. HE WAS STILL ALIVE WHEN I WALKED UP TO HIM, BUT MADE NO ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE. I PICKED HIM UP AND CARRIED HIM BACK TO WHERE I WAS SITTING AND STEPPED OFF 70 PACES. HE DIED ON HIS OWN ABOUT FIVE MINUTES LATER. I GOT TO WATCH HIM PUT ON A FANTASTIC STRUTTING AND GOBBLING SHOW FOR SOME HENS AND TO MY CALLS FOR ABOUT 1 1/2 HOURS BEFORE I GOT A SHOT AT HIM. I’LL NEVER FORGET IT.

THANKS,

ART

  • HELLO EVERYONE,

GREAT TO SEE YOU ALL AGAIN, JUST SORRY WE DIDN’T GET TO SPEND MORE TIME HANGING OUT! THANKS TO YOU I WAS ARRESTED AT THE AIRPORT FOR CARRYING UNIDENTIFIABLE MEAT PRODUCTS (TURKEY JERKEY) WAS STRIP SEARCHED AND SPENT 24 HOURS IN A CELL BEING INTERROGATED BY SIX BURLY CUSTOMS OFFICIALS. NOT TO WORRY THOUGH, I GOT OUT AFTER PUTTING MY APARTMENT UP TO COVER THE BAIL. A LITTLE SORE AROUND THE EDGES BUT STILL IN ONE PIECE! THANKS FOR BEING SUCH FABULOUS CONTRIBUTORS TO THE DOCUMENTARY-I KNOW IT WAS A BIG DEAL FOR YOU TO LET US IN TO YOUR PLACE AND WE REALLY APPRECIATE ALL YOUR HOSPITALITY AND PATIENCE WITH THE FILMING. THANK YOU ALSO FOR ALL THE SHIRTS, JACKET ETC YOU GAVE ME-I KNOW MY RELATIVES WILL APPRECIATE THEM WHEN I WRAP THEM UP AT CHRISTMAS TIME. I SUPPOSE IT’S TURKEY SEASON COMING UP SOON SO DRAKE AND JOSH CAN STOP CHASING GIRLS FOR A BIT AND START CHASING BIRDS. THEY WILL PROBABLY HAVE MORE CHANCES WITH TURKEYS ANYWAY. YOU’LL ALL BE BUSY IN THE STUDIO I IMAGINE UP TO YOUR NECKS IN FLESH AND FEATHERS, BUT DO TRY AND TAKE SOME TIME OUT-YOU DESERVE A BREAK FROM ALL THOSE TURKEYS! I WILL SEND YOU A DVD OF THE REHAB FILM WHEN IT’S DONE AND RICK, YOU ARE A GREAT GUY AND YOU MAKE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD. OH, AND I WAS JOKING ABOUT BEING ARRESTED…AND ABOUT GIVING MY STUFF AWAY!

ALL THE BEST,

MORGAN

  • RICK,

  • KEITH BURGESS, PRIMOS HUNTING CALLS

I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF TURKEY MOUNTS IN LODGES ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND WHEN IT COMES TO REALISM OF A MOUNTED TURKEY, THE TURKEY ROOST IS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN. ANOTHER THING THAT IMPRESSES ME IS THE TURKEY DECOYS THAT THE TURKEY ROOST PRODUCES. WHEN YOU HAVE AN OLD HARD HEADED GOBBLER THAT WON’T COME IN GET YOU A REAL DECOY FROM THE TURKEY ROOST! THANKS FOR EVERYTHING RICK!

  • RANDY COLLINS, EXPERT TURKEY HUNTER & GUIDE

HELLO RICK,

I JUST WANTED TO TAKE A MOMENT TO THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THE SUPERIOR WORK YOU HAVE DONE FOR ME ON THE TURKEY MOUNTS. MY TURKEYS DISPLAYED IN MY OFFICE AND HAVE HAD SEVERAL COMPLIMENTS ON THE QUALITY OF WORK YOU AT “THE TURKEY ROOST” HAVE MASTERED. THE ANATOMY ON THE LAST TURKEY COMPLETED IS ABSOLUTELY “PERFECT” AND YOUR WORK IS BY FAR THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN IN THE TAXIDERMY BUSINESS.

BEST REGARDS,

RANDY

  • ROCHELLE BERRY

OK. I will admit…prior to my relocation to the Heartland from “Up North,” Ca…”Turkey” was hardly a hot topic of mine. Sure, we “had” wild turkey…I’d often see them by the dozens plowing down a hillside field, giggling poults in tow…laughing their insane laugh all the way up to the fence or roadside, where they would snoop and peer through the cracks or weeds at the people laughing back at them…usually me, sometimes my young daughter. Their cackle was contagious; it was no small feat to remain still and not burst into a fit of giggles just hearing them/seeing my young daughter’s reaction. When that occasional tom would explode before our delighted eyes in full strut, sure, it was a treat. We were probably more impressed than his girls. But honestly, I gave them little thought beyond the, “Oh, saw a buncha turkeys today when I was out looking for that @&&@! lion…” general observation, end of story. Just not the, well…OBSESSION it is out here in NE Missouri. ;+)
Occasionally an old friend would offer up a bit of smoked bird, not a favorite…so I’d pass. “MMMMM, don’t know whatcher missin’! It’s just the breast…and you gotta smoke it just so…use these chips, inject it with this, rub it with this…wait til the moon’s full…”(Ok, that’s planting garlic and corn.) I carried on, unmoved. Just wasn’t my thing.
Fast forward a few years to October of 2001, when I found myself settled in the quiet Midwestern town of Kirksville, MO. Zoom in on 2008: My young daughter now a beautiful and gifted young woman…A young woman eventually smitten and involved in a committed relationship with the PREMIER Turkey Taxidermist Guy in by Missouri. What this REALLY meant was I about to meet not only my daughter’s darling beau, but wild turkeys UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL…through the eyes of the undisputed Best of the Best. A really great guy who’s talent is the stuff turkey hunting legends are made of…the very guy whose pieces grace some of the finest homes and cabins of some of the most amazing and hardcore sportsmen you could ever hope to meet. I’ve gotta tell you, I am TRULY seeing turkeys in a whole different light. Now, when I’m out and about just doin’ my thing, naturally I can’t help but wonder how long it will be before that very bird I’m seeing out there in the field will end up taken by some passionate and skilled hunter and carefully placed into a state of suspended anticipation, in a freezer out at the workshop in Greentop, Missouri…awaiting professional and amazing rebirth at the hands of the Turkey Roost Crew. I’d never even seen a freeze dryer prior to meeting Rick, Drake and Natasha Morris…I had never seen ROW upon ROW of gorgeous mounts awaiting their crates. I had no idea sometimes turkey mounts had “fake” heads.(Not a Turkey Roost Bird, Ever.) Never gave it a thought. Had no idea what a tumbler was, or seen an artist’s hand at work stealthily applying crazy-realistic head color; never closely examined a record pair of spurs, or been shown how to prepare a kill for shipping and future treatment. I had never SEEN a dedicated showroom full of, well, just STUNNING turkey mounts, glorious birds posed in the most lifelike and PERFECT poses you would normally only expect to encounter in their wild (live) state. Stunning Wildlife Art as only nature would have it, recreated to your astonished and grateful joy once you place your beloved prize into the care and custody of the Turkey Roost Team. Over the past two years I’ve come to see these fine folk as family, but have also found no less than huge respect in my heart for what they do, seen nothing short of teary PRIDE glistening in the eyes of satisfied repeat customers they do it for, and, well, HOW they do it. The guys and gals who eat, drink, sleep and breathe wild turkeys 24/7/365 bring their birds to Rick and his crew. Does this ring any bells? Then you really need to experience for yourself what The Turkey Roost team is all about. If you’re an avid or novice turkey hunter, and bagging that first…or NEXT trophy bird is your fondest dream, you have to get out to meet Rick Morris and his son, Drake, and daughter, Natasha…at the Turkey Roost.
